WP 6 - Joined eParticipation socio-technical research

Though all eParticipation approaches are based upon a technical platform, exclusively technology-driven projects report low degrees of external acceptance. EParticipation initiatives need to have internal and external relevance to the social contexts they are situated in. They need to be sensitive to political context, discourse forms and differing stakeholder interests and this means they must address socio-political factors such as motivation, competences, interactivity, conflict management and quality. The theoretical background for such research is socio-technical and cross-disciplinary. The workpackage sets the necessary structures and themes in place for ensuring joined socio-technical research.

To further the successful use of eParticipation in terms of its effectiveness and efficiency, to develop a comprehensive methodological know how on realizing and standardizing eParticipation in its heterogeneous fields of application, it’s crucial to understand its complex
socio-technical nature. In research exist many different and to a large extend unrelated concepts addressing the socio-technical character of eParticipation or still not considered concepts possibly useful to better understand its socio-technical nature. The objectives of WP6 are to identify existing approaches developed with respect to eParticipation, relevant research fields reflecting the multi-dimensionality of eParticipation, and relevant contributions of other research disciplines with regard to be identified research fields. It aims at deepen and widen the sensitisation of the multi-dimensionality and inherently complexity of eParticipation. The work package strives to combine and, where possible, integrate different approaches, and to transfer results to the representatives of the different application areas.
The main objectives of WP6 are:

  1. To develop the theoretical basis for cross-disciplinary socio-technical research in
eParticipation, supporting the introduction and implementation of eParticipation in
    different application areas.
  2. To establish ways of supporting internal relevance (the quality of the eParticipation
online-discourse) and external relevance (the way eParticipation outcomes are used by
    political actors)
  3. To support the socio-technical theoretical basis eParticipation technical solutions and
    their successful implementation in practice

A feature of the work package will be its integration with WP5 Joined eParticipation technical research.
