Action

Up to Table of Contents

The actions available are copy, cut, delete and paste, and their functions are straightforward. However, it is important to note that the target of these actions is the item and not the content of the field or the text that you may have selected. The action will copy, cut or delete the current item you are viewing (beware: if you copy a folder, you need to select the folder and not its default view page). Paste will paste the item in your current location. If the item you are viewing is not a folder, the item will be pasted in its parent.

The cut and copy actions put an item in the memory of your session. It will be kept in memory as long as you are logged in. If you cut an item and then log out, or if you copy a second item, the original item cut is cancelled.

Copy and cut actions do not work the same way. When you copy and paste an item, the resulting object will have the same values in its fields except for the related item(s) field. All references to other related content on the portal will have been removed (it is a new item and does not have the same relations). The new object will also have a new hidden ID and thus all objects that linked to the previous item will not link to this one.

If you cut and paste an item, this will on the other hand empty the memory and move the cut item to its new location. The item will not change and ID, field values and links remain the same in its new location. Here, it is important to remember that links from other objects to the cut item will be broken when the item is pasted in its new location.

It is necessary to stress the importance of double checking before deleting, as it is very difficult to undo the action once it is performed. If you want to withdraw an item from the public, you can, instead of deleting it, change its state to private.
