Mediamix in local Democracy
Aims:The Internet is more and more used for citizen participation, be it for providing information or for chatting with politicians. But often these are only applications of technology that are hardly adaptable to other contexts (e.g. political, cultural, organisational). The objective of the project was to gain a more realistic picture of whether and how the Internet can be used to support local democracy. This question was differentiated with regard to the target groups and the content of the participation processes. For this purpose, analysis of different use cases (self conducted and external projects) has been undertaken, focussing the mix of online and offline tools and methods for eParticipation.
Description:
Currently some people hope that the Internet as an information and communication medium will facilitate the involvement of citizens in political procedures and thus give new impulses for the (further) development of local democracy. Often these expectations focus on the technological possibilities without sufficiently considering that it is necessary to embed them in existing processes and structures. Therefore, the risk is that the Internet will be found in the long row of media-technological innovations that raised similar hopes for supporting democracy they never fulfilled.
